In Reading, we are continuing to work in our small groups daily. Please continue to read the familiar reading books that your child brings home in their reading bag. It is important that they be reading at least 20 minutes every night.
In Phonics we are focusing on consonants and vowels and consonant clusters. The students have been doing a lot of Writing since Thanksgiving. Last week, we wrote a letter to Santa telling him all our Christmas wishes. We put all the letters into an big envelope and mailed it to the North Pole. This week, the students are working on a piece of descriptive writing in the form of a LOST poster. Each student created a snowman and then created a descriptive lost poster for it. We will hang these in the hallway and see if any of our first grade friends can figure out which snowman belongs to who. In Math we are continuing to work on building our addition and subtraction fact fluency (fast and accurate) to 20. This week, we began our unit on data and graphing. Within this unit we will be working on how to conduct a survey and creating tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs using the data. We will also be working on reading various graphs. In Science, we are working to understand light and sound. We have discussed how movement is needed to create a vibration which then creates sound waves. The students examined several materials that make sound. They also did an experiment on how sound can make matter vibrate. Tomorrow, we will do an experiment to see what happens when various objects are placed in front of a beam of light. We will also be using mirrors to show how light can be redirected. We will have a Spelling test this week. However, as next week is filled with lots of holiday activities there will not be a spelling test. We will resume with list #15 after the winter break.
