Reading
Please make sure the reading book/bag is returned every day. By the time the books come home we will have read them at least two times during reading groups, so you may find that the books seem easy for them. You may also notice the same book coming home more than once. Rereading books is one of the best ways to help them become more fluent readers. It will also do wonders for their confidence. It is very important that your child read at least 15-20 minutes at home each day. It is truly amazing the difference reading at home makes in your child’s success as a reader. They love to show off for their parents and siblings. What a great way to encourage the love of reading! Stuck on a Word?
Spelling When practicing spelling please have them use proper letter formation as well as the correct use of upper- and lower-case letters. Last week, I added two challenge words to the spelling list. The challenge words are optional and students may decide to try them or not. Soon, we will be starting dictation. More information will be coming home on dictation and how it will be graded.

For the last few weeks we have been working hard on our first big writing project. This descriptive writing project began with students making a Jack-O-Lantern face. They are so fun and creative! Each student then wrote a list of characteristics to describe their Jack-O-Lantern. Then, they took the list and made sentences and we edited and rewrote to produce a final draft. Here is a sneak peek at the bulletin board we created with this project! Last week, we completed a short unit on bats. We read the stories Stellaluna and Nightsong as well as several non-fiction books about bats. We even looked at batconservation.org to check out their live camera views of vampire and fruit bats! The kiddos really loved "checking on the bats"! At the end of our bat unit, each student made a bat craft and wrote three facts they learned about bats on the back. They did such a great job! We hung the bats from the ceiling to help decorate our classroom for October.
Last week, we were finally able to go on our much anticipated field trip to the Kansas History Museum. What an amazing way to end our Native American unit! The kids really enjoyed being able to see the various Native American homes and artifacts of the 4 tribes we have been learning about. A special thanks to all the parents that were able to attend the field trip. |
