Our class has been given the opportunity to contribute items to a theme basket for the Winter Carnival. Each theme basket will be auctioned off at the winter carnival on February 11, 2017 at TES. Our class has chosen the First-Aid Kit theme. A few ideas for the basket could be: Band-Aids, gauze, neosporin, thermometer, ice packs, first aid tape, Q-tips, nitrile gloves, tweezers, fingernail clippers, nail scissors, cotton balls, peroxide, rubbing alcohol, burn cream, hand sanitizer, chapstick, and saline solution. If you have other ideas, great! I just ask that you stick to the theme! The PTC is asking families to donate NEW items to be places in the basket, Please have your child bring his or her items to school not later than Monday, February 6, 2017. We hope you will attend the winter carnival to join in on the fun and bid on the baskets at the auction. All proceeds will go toward technology or other needs for our school. Thank you for your support of the Tonganoxie Elementary PTC!
The Valentine's Day party for our class will be held on February 14, 2017 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. As this party is before Parent/ Teacher conferences I will be sending a note home about treats for the party. Since we are having the party in the morning, we will have breakfast treats. Here are a list of items that are on the list: Doughnuts, fruit, orange juice, cookies. We will also need of small plates, cups, and napkins. Also, if anyone would like to organize a game or activity for the kiddos to do during the party that would be wonderful. I'm thinking that these few items will be plenty as I know the kiddos are probably going to receive a lot of candy along with their valentine cards. If you would like to volunteer to send any of the above items please contact me via email or a note sent to school with your student and let me know which item you would like to send. Thank you so much for your support and help to make this a fun event for the kids!
The kids and I are getting back into our daily routine after our much deserved winter break. I enjoyed hearing about all the family gatherings and the time spent making memories from the kids. Here is a look at what has been going on in the classroom since we returned.
Guided Reading---Last week, we adjusted back into our guided reading rotations. I was excited to hear the students fluency progress from practicing their read alouds over the break. This week, I will be giving each student a cold read (a book they have never read before) to make any needed adjustments in reading groups. Language Arts --- The whole group reading selection from both last week and this week are non-fiction stories on animals. Throughout both stories, we have been learning about text features such as : labels, headings, pictures, captions, table of contents, glossary, and index. Grammar--- Last week, we reviewed adjectives and how they are words that describe a noun. This week we are learning about verbs (action words). We played an awesome game of verb memory where each chid had to show an action and the next person had to mirror it and then add another action to the sequence. Some groups were able to get up to 10 verbs! We have also been learning about the sneaky silent "e". Spelling--- Upon our return from break, we have really been working hard on the sneaky silent "e" and how he makes vowels say their name. Last week, we worked on the spelling pattern a_e for long a vowel words. This week we are continuing the sneaky silent "e" spelling pattern for long i (i_e). ***Dictation sentences-- Last week was our first dictated sentence. The students did very well remembering to begin the sentence with a capital letter, put spaces between their words, and remember the punctuation at the end. Writing--- On Friday, we will begin an expository writing piece on how to build a snowman. We will continue to work on this project next week as well. Math--- We began Chapter 5 on place value last Monday. In the first part of the chapter, we focus on numbers from 11-20. We have also moved on the regrouping ones into groups of ten, learning that a dime is worth ten cents, and counting by tens. As we progress this week we will be expanding our numbers up to 100. Social Studies--- We will be focused on Social Studies this quarter. We began our unit on American Symbols last week. The students have been learning about the bald eagle. We have even been checking the bald eagle cam to sneak a peak at the new baby bald eagle, Oh my word, could it be any cuter! In this unit we also talk about The White House, The Liberty Bell, The Statue of Liberty, and the American Flag. We discussed our President Elect, Donald J. Trump and what his job will be when he takes office. |
