Reading
I wanted to thank all of you for reading with your child each night. and signing their reading log. By the time the books come home we will have read them at least two times during reading groups, so you may find that the books seem easy for them. You may also notice the same book coming home more than once. Rereading books is one of the best ways to help them become more fluent readers. It will also do wonders for their confidence. It is very important that your child read at least 15-20 minutes at home each day. It is truly amazing the difference reading at home makes in your child’s success as a reader. They love to show off for their parents and siblings. What a great way to encourage the love of reading! Stuck on a Word?
Spelling When practicing spelling please have them use proper letter formation as well as the correct use of upper- and lower-case letters. This week will be the second week for dictation. Students are graded on proper use of capital letters, spacing, spelling of words, and the use of an end mark. The grade on the dictation sentence will be added to their language grade. Our school fundraiser ends tomorrow. If you student was able to sell some items, please be sure to send the packet including order form and money back with your student in the morning. We will also be going to the library tomorrow so please help your kiddo remember to put their library books in their book bag.
Happy Friday! I wanted to send out a few reminders about next week.
Fundraiser All fundraising packets are due back to school on Tuesday, October 9, 2018. Please be sure to have all checks and the order form included in your students packet. Music Program The first grade music program is on Thursday October 11, 2018. Students will report to my classroom at 7:15. The theme is pajama party. So all students need to wear a pair of pajamas. Students are also asked to bring a medium sized stuffed animal marked with their name on Monday so they can use it to rehearse for the program this week. Please make sure your child's name is somewhere on the animal. Spelling Dictation Beginning next week, I will be adding one dictated sentence to our spelling test. This dictated sentence will be made up of words from past spelling lists as well as the list for that week, Students are expected to begin the sentence with a capital letter, have spacing between their words, only use capitals in the appropriate place (i.e. names, beginning of a sentence), and have an end mark. The score for the sentence will be posted at the bottom of your child's spelling test and added to the Language Arts grade. Have a wonderful weekend! We have been very busy these last few weeks. The kids have been practicing the components of Daily 5 in preparation for guided reading. These include: read to someone, read to self, writing, listen to reading, and word work. During our morning guided reading block, I will be meeting with small groups of students and teaching a reading lesson. While I am meeting with groups, students rotate through the daily 5 activities. Every night your student will be bringing home a reading bag with a book to practice reading aloud to someone at home. After your child reads, please fill out the reading log and send the log and book back to school in the reading bag. Like the take home folder, students are expected to bring their reading bag and book back each day. We spend two days working on a story, so it will not be uncommon for your student to bring home the same book to practice. This helps build fluency. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me,
Tomorrow is picture day! Students will be taking individual student pictures in the morning. My class is scheduled to take our pictures beginning at 8:50. Please be sure to send any picture forms and money tomorrow if you wish to order and did not do so online.
