I hope everyone enjoyed time with friends and family over the Thanksgiving break! I am looking forward to seeing all the kiddos tomorrow and hearing about their Thanksgiving. I have been working on the classroom website today. I added a page of student pictures where you can find all the pictures that I take of the kiddos throughout the year. Below, you can see a picture of the turkey hats we made on Tuesday and a few examples of student writing for How to Help a Turkey Escape From Thanksgiving Dinner. This was such a fun writing assignment. The kids came up with some very creative ways to help the Thanksgiving turkeys escape!

In Reading, we continue to work in our small guided reading groups. You may notice that your child may change reading groups once in a while. This is nothing to be concerned about. First graders don't all learn at the same pace. Reading levels fluctuate.
In Math, we are working on addition strategies. We've learned to use a number line, count on, use doubles and near doubles, and act it out. We will also be learning to add three addends before moving on to subtraction strategies. With these lessons, we have been learning a lot of new vocabulary. Ask your child to tell you about what he/she knows about the following words. It's great practice to "talk about math"! Your child will be so proud to show what he/she knows! add - when you join groups together sum - the answer to an addition problem plus - the symbol used to add addends - the numbers that are being added or joined together counting on- when you say the big number and count on to find the sum doubles fact - an addition number sentence that has the same addends doubles plus one - when you solve for a doubles fact and add one more doubles minus one - when you solve for a doubles fact and take one away subtract - take away part from the whole group minus - the symbol used to subtract or take away difference - the answer to a subtraction problem In Science, we are working to understand how the Earth rotates and how it orbits around the sun. We will also begin our project to understand the phases of the moon. You might want to ask your child what phase the moon is in over the next few weeks. The Spelling list is sent home every Monday. If we do not have school on Monday, I will send the spelling list home the Friday before. The entire list of words are on the spelling page of this website. You can always check there for a current copy of the list. Remember that we will begin adding a dictated sentence to our spelling test this week. We will begin with one and be adding another one after Christmas. Information on how dictation sentences will be graded was detailed in the November Newsletter sent home last week. I would like to send a big THANK YOU to all the parents who helped make the Halloween party a success. A great time was had by everyone. The storage on my phone was full so I was only able to get a few photos. If you have some photos that you would like to share please email them to me and I will get them on the website.
